A set of silver cufflinks made from two Wilhelmina quarters and two Wilhelmina dimes. All coins are from the war year 1941. The cufflinks could be worn as a sign of silent resistance against the German occupier during the Second World War. They were suitable for this purpose because they prominently displayed the image of Queen Wilhelmina. Until the year 1941, silver coins were minted with the image of Queen Wilhelmina. In 1942, however, zinc coins were introduced. On the one hand, because the silver could be used for the benefit of the German war industry. On the other hand, because it bothered the Germans that the image of Queen Wilhelmina could be found on the coins. The silver coins were then used to make jewellery, including brooches, bracelets, pins, spoons and pendants. By wearing it, you could indicate that you were loyal to the Dutch royal family. This was not without danger.
