Silver inkwell set consistsing of a partly gilded silver and wooden bottom plates, a crystal inkwell with silver mounts and a silver lid designed as a statue of the Greek god Hermes with in the background a ship (Hermes the god of commerce).
The bottom dish is engraved; “From Sir Robert F. Turing Bart and Mr Henry Turing to mr. H.K. Koert In recognition of 50 years valued service Rotterdam 1889"
Henry Turing was, like his father, British consul in the Netherlands.
Inkwell and inkwell lid bear Dutch hallmarks (NN014) Bottom plate bears Dutch hallmark NN011. Maker's mark 52850 register no. 12923 for Fa. J.M. van Kempen & Zonen Voorschoten as used between 1858-1924. Date letter X for the year 1882.
